If it weren’t for Hermann Katz, his high school history teacher, Anthony Villaraigosa may not have survived into adulthood, let alone gone on to become the mayor of Los Angeles. Mr. Katz saw the potential in young, undisciplined Anthony and urged him to honor it, eventually convincing him to take the SATs and attend college. The rest, as they say, is history, but the retired teacher’s good influence doesn’t stop there. Having benefited from Katz’s message of education and self-confidence, Villaraigosa takes every opportunity to extend it to others.
